Daily Excerpt: Healing from Incest (Henderson & Emerton)
Excerpt from Healing from Incest by Geri Henderson and Seanne Emerton:
Acknowledgements
Writing this book was never going to be easy. Chapters were written and discarded many years ago. When I was convinced that the inspiration for the book and this format was my most important mission to date, I knew it would never see the light of day without Seanne’s willingness to listen, to believe, and to trust me. I will be forever grateful to her for allowing this book to be written.
There were other readers, friends, and colleagues too who gave us feedback and especially their conviction that this was an important addition to the literature on the topic. Most of all, they said it would be helpful. I am particularly grateful to Gary, Toni, Rich, Sandy, CharlAnn, Jeanette, Eric, Pam, Cynthia, Madeline, Stephanie, Kathryn, Cheryl, and Marty who have been unflagging in their support, not to mention their desire to see its final completion. Some of these individuals were readers; all of them encouraged me to persevere in this rather long process even though the difficulties seemed insurmountable at times. Of special mention is Shari, who provided the image for the cover and helped me deal with concerns I had about my family.
I was not surprised that my family had reservations about the publication of this book. I have appreciated their thoughtful consideration of the possible implications of such a book and yet trust in my care to protect them. I love them for allowing me to tell this story, and I hope I have honored their trust.
Although I never really wanted to write this book, I can now say that despite the difficulties in its germination process, I am incredibly grateful for Geri’s inner knowing that it needed to be written. Her choice and consent, as well as her family’s, to release her personal information for the purpose of this book, and her courage, openness, and honesty in telling her story is not only inspiring but motivating. The writing has been an intense personal and professional journey for which I am forever grateful. I thank Susan Lewis, Ph.D., J.D. for helping me see and embrace the greater good in the telling of this story using our real names. I also thank Theresia and Heike for helping me see this more clearly. I would not have begun this endeavor without the support of my husband, Tom, who has given invaluable insight and feedback. Our children, Nate, Britt, Andrew, and Megan have been supportive in ways that have been especially helpful. I thank my colleagues and friends who have been steadfast in support and feedback: Joni, Pam, Marvin, Shari, Doug, Carlene, Linda, Loyie, Denise and my Family Resources family. Thank you to Mikey Amedeo who contributed his artful skill and design for the book’s cover, and to Dr. Howard Tyas for his helpful consultation. Thank you to Jamshed Morenas, my family therapy trainer through Philadelphia Child Guidance Center, who was masterful in teaching the subtle art of doing therapy and the value, power, and complexity of family systems.
