INTRODUCTION
The
“pursuit of happiness” is one of the rights promised in the Declaration of
Independence, and most of us spend quite a bit of time engaged in this
endeavor. Typically, we think it takes some big event---a wedding, job
promotion, fantastic vacation—to bring happiness into our lives. But is this
true? Could we, in fact, be happy simply by carrying out our daily activities?
I say
yes—if those activities are things we really like to do. The key to being happy
is to engage on a daily basis in work or play that we love. And the key to
turning this happiness into joy is gratitude.
This is
not an esoteric philosophy. It has nothing to do with reaching Nirvana or some
other-worldly frame of mind. Yes, those states of consciousness can point the
way—but for everyday happiness we need a practical set of techniques that will
work year after year, despite obstacles. In addition to gratitude, these
techniques include self-awareness and an appreciation of oneself involved in
meaningful work or play.
This
book will offer a recipe for ongoing contentment, taking you through the steps
of:
1. Identifying what activities make you
truly happy (everyone is different)
2. Learning to express gratitude
effectively
3. Practicing self-awareness (essential for
happiness)
4. Developing a sense of self-appreciation
(key to ongoing contentment)
Oftentimes
we claim our happiness, only to find ourselves ambushed by an unexpected health
problem or financial crisis. “How can I possibly be happy,” we moan, “faced
with this?” But if happiness is so flimsy it can’t withstand challenges—even
severe challenges—it’s probably not worth seeking.
The type of happiness I’m describing can accommodate disturbances, even life-sized upsets. Using the God-given principles of love, forgiveness, temperance and charity, we can build a foundation of happiness for ourselves that cannot be shaken. Then, instead of looking at happiness as a goal, we can consider it our birthright—and not just the pursuit of happiness, but the ongoing enjoyment of it.
