Cancer Diary: Vitamins and Cancer

Vitamin supplements are the easy-to-obtain, off-the-shelf, magic pills that keep us healthy, right? Well, actually, some vitamins and supplements have been associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer when taken in high doses. Here are a few examples:

  1. Vitamin A (Retinoids): High doses of vitamin A supplements have been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer.

  2. Beta-Carotene: High doses of beta-carotene supplements have been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, especially in smokers.

  3. Vitamin E: Some studies suggest that high doses of vitamin E supplements may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

  4. Folic Acid: Excessive intake of folic acid supplements may increase the risk of colon cancer.

  5. Selenium: High doses of selenium supplements have been linked to an increased risk of skin cancer.

It's important to note that these associations are based on studies involving high doses of supplements, not the vitamins obtained from a balanced diet. Always consult with a healthcare professional before taking any supplements, especially in high doses

Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page, Carl's Cancer Compendium, as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The CCC is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carry an informative, cancer-related story -- and be open to guest posts: Cancer Diary.
