Tip #47 from 365 Teacher Secrets of Parents (McKinley & Trombly) - Forgetfulness

Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.

The Forgetful Child

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.

Another common problem is falling behind on work. Does your child sometimes come home without books or her homework and then bring home a note about missing assignments?

As your child gets older, the volume and difficulty of the work she is expected to do will most likely increase. Very likely, if she misses an assignment or two, she will fall behind, which can result in a helpless, frustrating feeling. There are many reasons why children fall behind, but one of the most common reasons is that children simply forget to bring work home or forget what their assignments are.

If you find your child consistently forgets to bring her homework home or can’t even remember or relate to you what she’s learning in various subjects at school, a homework notebook and folder may help. (Idea #13 for some ideas.) For the folder, go to the store and let your child pick out a folder she particularly likes. Maybe let her decorate it with stickers or drawings, too. If she has a folder she loves, she’s even more apt to use it.

A homework notebook and folder can help in three ways. First, they can help your child remember which assignments she has finished and which she needs to take home to complete. Secondly, the homework notebook can help parents know what was covered in school that day. Third, all she needs to complete is in one place.

We have included a sample page from a homework notebook. Look it over and adjust it to fit your child’s schedule and needs. Remind your child to look over her homework notebook before she leaves school to help her gather the work she needs to take home. Have her put everything she needs to finish in that special folder. You may find at first that you will have to enlist the help of her teacher. A reminder from her teacher to write assignments down after each subject, and a few minutes given at the end of class to gather unfinished work, will help make the process smoother.

When your child gets home, make it a habit to find a time to sit down and go over her homework notebook together. As she finishes each assignment, encourage her to check it off as “done” and place it in her school bag right away to turn in the next day.

Using the homework notebook consistently can help your child feel more in control, be less overwhelmed, and teach her organizational skills that she will be able to use her whole life!
