Keep the Exercise Habit Going
Everyone knows that housework isn’t
exactly fun. It is, however, a way to stay active and do things we need to do
anyway while getting some exercise. This was particularly important while the
stay-at-home order was in place during the pandemic. Exercise can and should be
fun. It can be even more so when you are working out to your favorite music or
exercising with friends and family.
As the world slowly got back to
normal, people returned to gyms, perhaps with new awareness of how beneficial
exercise is to our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. It took a pandemic
for people to understand what the medical community has long known.
Staying active improves quality of
life. Exercise reduces stress, boosts the immune system, reduces the risk of
numerous diseases, improves sleep, prevents weight gain, and makes us feel and
look better. What more can you ask?
Becky Maloney and her daughter
Kelsey are both patient care technicians at a hospital in Florida, a state that
had a high number of corona virus cases. They both worked long, stressful hours
at the hospital during the pandemic, and they both relieved stress by working
out together when they weren’t working. Exercising has become a familiar
practice among care givers during this stressful time.
Becky says that when patients no longer
test positive for the virus and are in recovery mode, the hospital frequently uses
physical therapy to help them mend.
“When the patient is strong enough, it
is an advantage to get them up and moving,” Becky says.
This is common practice for many patients
recovering from hospital stays. Exercise can heal as well as maintain health.
Becky and Kelsey don’t only work out to
an exercise routine on their computer at home. They also ride bikes, walk on
the beach, go kayaking and go on horseback rides with their families. They are another
illustration of how staying active and exercising can help people deal with
life.
When the pandemic becomes just an
unpleasant memory, all of the exercise innovations developed during its
onslaught can be easily coalesced into our daily routines.
“Exercise is something I committed to
before the pandemic in order to have a healthier lifestyle,” Becky says.
Exercise is good for you, whether it
takes place in a gym, a park or at home, so keep active and keep exercising
post-pandemic. It’s not just good for your health and your appearance. It’s
fun.
