Morning Prayer: Effect of the Resurrection

From Morning Prayer: “God of mercy, may our celebration of your Son’s resurrection help us experience its effect in our lives.”

The Church never treats the Resurrection as a past event we simply remember. It is a present power we are meant to experience. This short prayer from Morning Prayer is deceptively simple, but it carries a profound invitation: the Resurrection is not only something Christ underwent — it is something meant to take effect in us.

What is that “effect”?

1. The Resurrection restores our hope

The first effect is interior: a shift from resignation to hope. The Resurrection tells us that no situation is final, no darkness is absolute, no tomb is truly sealed. When we pray this line, we are asking God to let that truth sink into the places where we have quietly given up — the relationships we think cannot heal, the habits we think cannot change, the grief we think we must simply carry alone.

2. The Resurrection reorders our identity

If Christ has risen, then death is no longer the defining boundary of our lives. Fear is no longer our master. Sin is no longer our name. We belong to the One who has already passed through death and come out the other side. The effect of the Resurrection is that we begin to live as people who know this — with a steadiness that does not come from us.

3. The Resurrection empowers us to love differently

The Risen Christ breathes peace on His disciples and sends them out. The effect of the Resurrection is not private consolation; it is mission. It gives us the courage to forgive, to reconcile, to serve, to risk kindness in a world that often rewards hardness. It makes possible the kind of love that is stronger than fear.

4. The Resurrection draws us into God’s mercy

The prayer begins, “God of mercy…” because the Resurrection is the ultimate act of mercy: God entering our death so we could enter His life. To “experience its effect” is to let that mercy reach the places we hide — our shame, our failures, our wounds — and allow God to raise what we thought was beyond repair.

5. The Resurrection makes us participants, not spectators

We don’t just celebrate Christ’s rising; we are meant to rise with Him. Every time we choose truth over convenience, forgiveness over resentment, courage over fear, generosity over self-protection — the Resurrection is taking effect in us. It becomes not only a doctrine we profess but a life we live.

Morning Prayer posts inspired by Being Catholic in Troubled Times (Dennis Ortman)

Book Descrption:

These are times that try our souls. This book is addressed to all, not just Catholics, who search for deeper meaning in tough times. Our age is marked by division and alienation. We long for some message that will bring peace to our world and our hearts.

This book suggests that the Catholic faith can provide strength in these troubled times. The word "catholic" means "all-embracing, universal." Nothing is excluded in the catholic mind. The truth that sets us free can be found everywhere, especially in unexpected places. It is often hidden in plain sight. In our darkest moments, we find new light and life. When we are most despairing, a ray of hope shines through.
