A Caturday Post: Cats in War 2: Mohamed Mosa Mo's Rescue of Animals in Gaza

Image
Finally, the second post in the series of Caturday posts about cats trapped in war zones. Cats are not political (nor are dogs or any other animal for that matter--nor, generally, the people caring for them, nor this post). In peace and where people watch out for them, cats enjoy being loved and learn to return love. Yet, cats (and other animals) do get find themselves struggling in war zones. They, just like people who have done nothing to bring harm to anyone else but just happen to live there, suffer the consequences of evil descending unexpectedly from sources external to them. Like people, cats and other animals suffer when they are homeless and without food or winter. And they are often completely forgotten when war (or natural disaster, for that matter -- they drown in floods and burn in fires) breaks out. Like people, they have to dodge bullets, bombs, and other dangers. Unlike people, they are often not calculated into humanitarian outreach efforts In this post, we share...

Daily Excerpt: Jesus Is Still Passing By (Easterling) - A Gentile Woman's Child

Image
excerpt from Jesus Is Still Passing By by Bennett Easterling -  A GENTILE WOMAN’S CHILD (Gospel account in Matthew 15:21-28; Matthew 20:29-34) Jesus went to the vicinity of Tyre, where a Canaanite woman came to him pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter has a demon in her, and it’s severely tormenting her.” Jesus gave her no reply. His disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to leave,” they said. “She’s bothering us with all her begging.” Sensitive souls, right? Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent to help the people of Israel, God’s lost sheep, not the Gentiles.” But she came and worshipped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” Again, he protested, “It’s not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” “Yes, Lord,” she agreed, “but even puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Her reply seemed to astonish the Lord, blowing away any further thought of refusal. “Woman, great is your faith,” he told...

Excerpt from how My Cat Made Me a Better Man: Introduction

Image
I moved to Los Angeles a year after graduating college. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a lot going for me. I worked intermittently at a series of terrible jobs. My studio apartment was the size of a large shoebox. Money was so tight that ramen noodles were a luxury. And I was completely alone. Who knew that being broke, underemployed, and living in a glorified closet wouldn’t appeal to the ladies? I felt pretty down. I was alone in the world and didn’t see a way to lift myself up into a better situation. So, I thought carefully about all my options. Should I empower myself with a self-help book? No, those are for chicks (or so I told myself). Could I talk things over with my friends? Doubtful. Sharing my feelings with a group of guys didn’t appeal to me because, well, I’m a guy. I briefly toyed with the idea of seeing a life coach. But that wouldn’t work because who in their right mind sees a life coach? I couldn’t come up with any other options. So, where could I go to get my life ...

Daily Excerpt: Clean Your Plate! (Bayardelle) - Chapter 1/Do you need any money?, Part 2

Image
/ Excerpt from  Clean Your Plate!  (Bayardelle)  -   Chapter 1 Do You Need Any Money?  (continued from May 22, 2024) So, How Do Kids Get Money?  So, now that we can all agree kids need some kind of financial experience, the questions become how do we give them money, how much should they get, and what (if any) rules should be attached to the way they spend it? We’ll go over each of these questions in the upcoming sections, but before we go any further, I want to make one thing very clear: not all household chores should be paid.  The Case for Unpaid Chores   There is a wealth of psychological research that demonstrates the long-term benefits of having kids do chores. Kids who were given chores at home have been shown to have better social relationships and higher grades, get better early-career jobs, and manifest a higher degree of self-sufficiency (M. Rossman, 2002, cited in Wallace, 2015).  These findings were strongest ...

Daily Excerpt: Girl, You Got This! (Renz) - Mind

Excerpt from  Girl, You Got This!  Mind “I wanted a child so much that I couldn’t get pregnant” -Kelly, mom of two dogs Sometimes, getting fit isn’t just about working out. As a personal trainer I am part coach and part therapist. More often than you would expect, my clients and I just sit and talk during their appointment. We talk about their home lives, how they are feeling about the workouts, how they are feeling about their diet and their body. It is all important, and in order to maintain regular workouts, these topics need to be given time and attention. If I don’t create a safe space for my clients to come and chat honestly about health and fitness, they will stop showing up. People need breaks!   Let’s get serious for a second. Trying to have a baby can be heart wrenching. There is no way to guarantee you will conceive or have an easy pregnancy. So, while all the tips ...

Excerpt from How My Cat Made Me a Better Man (Feig): Confidence

Image
Confidence Dogs will perform silly little tricks to earn affection from their masters. Cats will never stoop to that level. So, while my childhood cocker spaniel would happily present his paw for me, Shelly would roll her eyes at what an idiot I was for even asking for it. We're not all born with an innate sense of confidence and self-worth. So, think like a cat, and don't do things that are beneath you. You're better than that. Just because someone tells you to dance doesn't mean you should bust out the Macarena.   There's no reason to kiss up to your boss, praising his genius for every pointless idea he suggests. Unless you're a ninja at brown-nosing, it'll be obvious what you're doing. It won't make you look good, either. You'll just seem like someone who lacks the confidence to say what he really believes. Think in the same terms for your relationships. If your girlfriend blames you for something that went wrong, that doesn't me...

Daily Excerpt: From Deep Within (Lewis) - The Cutting Group

Image
excerpt from From Deep Within (Lewis)  The Cutting Group   The door to the outpatient clinic’s waiting room opened and flakes of snow swept in with a chilling cold. The room was shaped in a perfect square. Twelve chairs in total leaned on opposite walls. The upholstery had once been institutional grey, but now it had black marks throughout, with tears soaked into the fabric and yellow/brown filth embedded in the seams. The center of each chair had taken on a rounded contour from years of patients sitting in the same place. Footprint marks were embedded in the carpet in front of each chair, showing where hundreds of people had placed their feet over the years. The wear in the carpet reminded me of the worn yellow footprints millions of airport travelers step into every day when passing through X-ray machines at security.   When the weather was damp, the clinic waiting room smelled like wet dirty diapers. At one end of the room was a sliding glass window with one si...
