Book Review: Parenting in a Pandemic (Liz Bayardelle) by Literary Titan

Image
Parenting in a Pandemic  is the book we all needed and for which we never dreamed we would have to search. Bayardelle breaks down a tremendous amount of information in a short, well-organized, and engaging read. I highly recommend Bayardelelle’s guide to any parent looking to navigate the waters of parenting in this pandemic while waiting patiently on a return to what may be our new normal. 5 stars Read the rest of the review on Literary Titan .  Read more posts about Liz Bayardelle and her books HERE .

Daily Excerpt: Staying Safe While Sheltering in Place (Schnuelle et al.) - You, Me, Staying at Home (Coping, Seriously)

Excerpt from  Staying Safe While Sheltering in Place  (Schnuelle, Adams, & Henderson) (written as one of our pandemic books, much of the advice is pertinent even now) From chapter: You, Me, Staying at Home (Schnueel) Coping, Seriously As soon as practicalities were largely handled and as time stretched out, the themes that came up repeatedly boiled down to, “How do I not lose my mind?” Keeping one’s sanity lies in realizing this is an abnormal situation. In unprecedented circumstances, it is actually normal not to know what the hell is going on. We don’t live through world-wide novel virus pandemics\ often, and aren’t we all so thankful for that? In an abnormal situation, the usual routines will probably not work.  We have to do something new. Adapting to what is happening right now, instead of trying to impose the old ‘normal,’ will probably work better. Get relentlessly practical and find a new normal: here is what we can do today. Now we go to school online. Now we order gro

Guest Post from Franki Bagdade (I Love My Kids, But I Don't Always Like Them): The Day I Learned I Was Really Important, Just Not in the Way I Thought

Shared from Jackie's blog:  The Day I Learned I Was Really Important, Just Not in the Way I Thought The past week or so has been tough! Blog subject, or maybe book subject tough. On Tuesday I picked up a full mug of coffee and felt a familiar dull ache. This ache sent a panicked message to my brain. Oh crap! I’m getting a flare. My "tell" that a fibro flare is coming is this dull achy hand and wrist pain. So uncomfortable that I can’t wrap my fingers around a glass or even hold my phone without making it worse. I quickly calmed myself with the reminder that I hadn’t had a flare up that lasted more than a few days in over three years. Whatever I was doing, meds, supplements, diet, exercise-ish (being honest here), was keeping my symptoms at bay! For the rest of the day I took it easy on my joints and tried my best to stay calm. Later that my evening my shoulders and neck started to ache but again I reminded myself that it should all be over soon. I thought about how luck

Excerpt from How to Stay Safe While Sheltering in Place (Schnuelle et al.): Factors to keep in mind where there has been violence in a relationship

Image
Excerpt:  Two especially important factors to keep in mind when there has been violence in a relationship and there is a potential for it to happen again.      1) You need to do or say whatever you have to, in order to placate the abusive partner and keep them from escalating.       2) Safety overrules accountability. This means that when you are in a potentially dangerous situation, it is better to be safe than to call someone out on their abusive behaviors or statements, which may just escalate things further. While there are many situations that contribute to family violence, parenting and money matters are two of the most common.  Difficulty with Kids  Kids are on edge and struggling right now, sometimes not getting schoolwork done or arguing with parents and siblings. In this time of social distancing and perhaps even quarantine, kids cannot do some of the many things that they usually do to de-stress such as play at the park, go play at friends’ houses, attend birt

Effective Parenting in Times of Corona (guest post by Dr. Haim Omer)

Image
The continuity principle: How parents, teachers and social leaders can help children in times of Corona This post was written together with Dr. Rina Omer The continuity principle is a unified concept for coping with disaster and trauma formulated at the time of the First Golf War. Based on a review of the literature (Omer, 1991) the principle of continuity stipulated that "during crisis and disaster , one should aim at preserving and restoring functional, interpersonal and personal continuities, at the individual, family, organization and community levels." Functional continuity is the ability to go on functioning in spite of disturbances. Interpersonal continuity refers to the maintenance of contacts with family, friends, colleagues and any other circles to which one belongs. Personal continuity refers to feelings of sameness and coherence in our sense of self. For instance: for a 10-year old boy, functional continuity will comprise routines such getting-u
