Cancer Diary: Cancer Treatment in Nigeria?

This is a slightly different kind of Cancer Diary post. It is not sharing information but rather asking for it.

One of the MSI Press staff, who lives in Nigeria, sent a note yesterday:

"Sadly, I have some bad news to share with you. My mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has now spread to the bone to cause Spinal Metastasis, resulting in a fracture of the right femoral neck with the femoral head tilting into varus position and surrounding bone marrow and joint effusion.

I was wondering if you know of any US-based not-for-profit organisation that helps women in Africa (especially in Nigeria) in this kind of condition with medical, counselling or financial assistance?  We are in need of medical assistance to manage my mother's condition. I was hoping that you can connect me with any such organisation to provide us with the best treatment options available. The medical expenses associated with my mother's condition have been quite significant, and we are struggling to pay for her treatment."

I do not know of any such help in the US or Nigeria, but that does not mean it does not exist. Do any of you reading this post know? Would you share this post with others who might know?

Four years ago, Premium Times published an article, "Nigeria to set up cancer treatment fund." Does anyone know whether this fund has been established and whether the article is mostly hype or mostly substance?

Information can be left via comments to this post. Comments are moderated, but I do get them. MANY THANKS for any guidance Cancer Diary readers can provide!

Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page, Carl's Cancer Compendium, as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The web page is in its infancy but expected to expand into robustness. To that end, it is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carry an informative, cancer-related story -- and be open to guest posts: Cancer Diary.
