Daily Excerpt: 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas (Gentile) - Introduction

Excerpt from 108 Yoga and Self-Care Practices for Busy Mamas by Julie Gentile -

Introduction

I wrote what you are about to read at the center of my very full life as a mom of two young children, working full-time as a marketing and communications professional, and leading yoga classes as a certified and registered yoga teacher. At that time, my husband was also working and going to school full time. “Full” is the key word here. With full hearts and full plates, we were bursting with busyness.

Many days pushed me beyond my limits, bringing me to tears of exhaustion and left me wondering if I was living life to my maximum potential. I was overcome with responsibilities that pulled me in multiple directions, but in me remained my ultimate duty to take care of myself. How did I do that as a working mama in an era where I was available via text message, phone, email, and social media?

I called upon my yoga and meditation background to help. It responded loud and clear: Take incredible care of yourself now so you can take care of the others in your life. Part of my ultimate wellness path is sharing what I’ve learned along the way with you, so you can easily transition from caring for others around the clock to caring more for you.

In observing and having conversations with others, I’ve found that there is opportunity for more people to take better care of themselves. They might eat nourishing meals, but they might not prioritize exercise or quality sleep. They might excel in their careers or be super engaged parents, but self-care is low on their to-do list. Once taking care of yourself becomes your No. 1 priority, you will become a master of your own wellbeing. People will notice, and they will want that for themselves. Your ability to inspire others will be unstoppable.

As the author of numerous health and wellness articles and taking what I have learned from a decade of practice on the four corners of my yoga mat, I have gathered inspiring tips and tools that I bring with me off my mat and on to these pages. These tools have served as a source of strength and steadiness for me, and they will help you persevere through your most chaotic moments as a mama, too.

It is an honor to serve as your personal wellness mentor as you set out to stand up for your self-care. I definitely get it—being a mama in the 21st century can be overwhelming. It’s stop-what-you’re-doing-right-now demanding. That’s why I designed this book to help you be the best version of you in everything you do, and it starts with self-care. These pages ask you to take a close look at your self-care and mindfully explore how your mind, body, and soul can radiate with wellness.

Self-care is about taking care of your full being: mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and beyond. It’s taking time to pay attention and to determine what it is you need to live a vibrant, healthy, happy life where you get to decide what comes next. It is not acceptable to sacrifice your self-care in the face of busyness.

In this book, you will find 108 (a sacred number in yoga) writing prompts, yoga poses, meditations, and breathing exercises, and other wellness practices to inspire you to walk a path of self-love. I’ve listed the practices that work for me, but this book is not an exhaustive list of self-care practices. This book was designed to help kick-start your self-care journey.

It is my wish for you that the following pages will spark an inner wellness revolution, help you build lifelong self-care practices, and serve as a dynamic guide so that you can realize your highest wellness potential and inspire that same transformation in others.

Drink from the fountain of wellness and delight in all that it has to offer. Take your time writing and reflecting, and take what you need from these pages. Own this experience. Make it yours. Then watch your wellness come to life.

I am excited to show you how to grow your self-love!

From my heart to each one of your hearts, namaste.
