A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Why Sharing Book Excerpts Is a Powerful Marketing Tool

It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.

This week, after posting the zillionth or so MSI Press book excerpt, it seemed like the topic of the power of sharing book excerpts as a marketing tool might be appropriate. So, er goes. These are omse of the reasons why sharing book excerpts can be a power marketing tool:

Builds Interest and Hype
Excerpts give readers a sneak peek into the book, sparking curiosity and making them want to read more.

Showcases Writing Style
Readers can get a feel for the author’s voice, tone, and storytelling, helping them decide if the book is for them.

Encourages Pre-orders and Sales
A compelling excerpt can push readers to pre-order the book or buy it as soon as it’s available.

Provides Shareable Content
Excerpts can be easily shared on social media, blogs, newsletters, and book websites, increasing visibility.

Engages Your Existing Audience
Readers who are already fans will appreciate early access to content and are more likely to help spread the word.

Attracts New Readers
Well-placed excerpts on book blogs, review sites, or online bookstores can introduce the book to new audiences.

Works as Free Marketing
Excerpts act as a free sample—letting the book sell itself without requiring a large marketing budget.

Helps with SEO and Discoverability
Posting excerpts online can improve search rankings, helping potential readers find the book more easily.

Creates Engagement Opportunities
Authors and publishers can use excerpts to start discussions, polls, or Q&A sessions with readers.

Can Be Used in Multiple Formats
Excerpts can be repurposed into teaser videos, read-alouds, social media posts, or email campaigns for wider reach.

Builds Trust and Credibility
For non-fiction books, excerpts help establish the author’s expertise and authority in the subject matter.

Provides Material for Reviews and Influencers
Excerpts can serve as material to attract reviewers and influences. They can also provide content for reviewers and influencers.

Bottom line: Whatever the reason(s) that matter to you, book excerpts can be a powerful marketing tool.
