The Story behind the Book: Road Map to Power (Husain & Husain)

Image
Today's blog post is the next in the series of book back stories and is the story behind Road Map to Power by Syed and Darius Husain. From the author -  The beginning for  Road Map to Power  occurred on the melting asphalt of a parking lot on a blistering Missouri summer day. It was there my father hitched a ride home from a work colleague named Bill. I will spare you the details of the encounter - you will have to read the book! - but the experience served as an inflection point in my father’s life. From many vantage points, Dr. Syed Arshad Husain was the American dream manifested. Born into humble beginnings, he immigrated to the United States and reached the pinnacle of his profession. On the way to the top, however, my father had drifted from the reasons why he embarked on the journey in the first place. His experience with Bill was a course correction and Dr. Syed Arshad Husain rededicated his life’s work to serving the most marginalized and forgotten in our ...

Image
The following excerpt comes from Road Map to Power by Darius and Arshad Syed Husain. (Power in this book refers to personal power, not political power.) The 10 Rules of Power 1) You are likely average, mathematically speaking. 2) We have become more Wal-Mart than Wildebeest. 3) When you get to the part about “created equal,” keep reading. 4) Governments cannot legislate genetics. 5) Looking for Security? It’s in the Attachment. 6) Chances are you’re happy (despite the best efforts of the media). 7) Forge your armor out of resiliency. 8) If you don’t like the ending, rewrite the story. 9) Cultivate your garden. 10) Be more than humane, be a humanitarian. Today, we introduce the Husains: father Syed Arshad and son Darius.  (We note with sadness that Dr. Husain, the father, died last year from COVID.) Their book, Road Map to Power , is original, thoughtful, and certain to be helpful to nearly anyone who reads it at setting their life on a good path. In Memoriam: Dr. Syed Arshad Husain

Image
We have learned that one of our authors, Dr. Syed Arshad Husain, passed into eternal rest last fall. According to his official biography,  Dr. Syed Arshad Husain M.D. , former Chief and Director of Training of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Missouri and the Senior Vice President/Medical Director of Psychiatry Services of Compass Health, died peacefully the morning of September 24th, 2022 at his home in Columbia, Missouri with his wife of over 50 years, Jennifer Devine Husain, at his side. He was 84 years old. A titan in the field of Child Psychiatry and a foremost expert in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dr. Husain’s greatest impact was the result of his decades-long worldwide humanitarian work serving the most vulnerable as they coped with the grief and trauma in the aftermath of the unimaginable destruction of both natural disasters and human created war zones. It is also the premise for Jason Miller’s play, That Championship Season, winner of Pulitzer and Tony awards. Originally debuting in 1972, the play was a rebuke of time-honored traditions and a challenge to many of the collective values held by society at large. Set in the coal mining town of Scranton, Pennsylvania, four star athletes return to the house of their former coach to share th...
