What Role Does Culture Play in LREC Studies?

  In Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC) studies, culture is the interpretive lens through which both language and regional knowledge acquire meaning. It is the living system of values, practices, and shared understandings that shape how people communicate, organize, and perceive the world. Without culture, LREC would describe mechanics without meaning. 1. Culture as the Framework of Understanding Culture provides the conceptual architecture for interpreting experience. It defines what counts as polite, persuasive, sacred, or true. It shapes communication norms. Tone, gesture, and silence carry different meanings across cultures. It shapes learning and teaching. Pedagogical styles reflect cultural expectations about authority and collaboration. It shapes research ethics. What is considered respectful inquiry in one culture may be intrusive in another.   In Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC) studies, regional expertise is the compass that orients understanding. If language is the medium and culture the meaning, regional expertise is the context that makes both coherent. It grounds abstract knowledge in place, history, and lived experience. 1. Regional Expertise as Contextual Intelligence Regional expertise is not just knowing about a place—it’s knowing within it. It combines geography, history, politics, economics, and social dynamics into a working model of how a region functions. It situates language. Dialects, idioms, and linguistic registers only make sense when tied to regional realities. It situates culture. Customs and values emerge from local conditions—climate, economy, religion, and historical memory. It situates interpretation.
