The Story behind the Book: Jesus Is Still Passing By (Easterling)

Image
Today's book back story is about the book, Jesus Is Still Passing By ,  by J Bennett Easterling. From the publisher: This is one of my favorite books. Usually, I pass along books for copyediting to one of or our copyeditors, and if a book is in need of actual editing, I recommend that the author take on external editor. This book was different. It was well written, but the miracles reached out to me.  In this book, the author provided a modern-day miracle for each Bible miracle. Thanks to the author's willingness to let a publisher have input, I found some interesting, dramatic examples of miracles that we were able to sew into the text.  Beyond that, we shared something that publisher and author rarely do: faith and discussion of faith. Needless to say, publishing this book was an unusually rewarding spiritual experience on a number of levels. For more posts about Bennett and his books, click HERE . Daily Excerpt: Jesus Is Still Passing By (Easterling) - A Gentile Woman's Child

Image
excerpt from Jesus Is Still Passing By by Bennett Easterling -  A GENTILE WOMAN’S CHILD (Gospel account in Matthew 15:21-28; Matthew 20:29-34) Jesus went to the vicinity of Tyre, where a Canaanite woman came to him pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter has a demon in her, and it’s severely tormenting her.” Jesus gave her no reply. His disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to leave,” they said. “She’s bothering us with all her begging.” Sensitive souls, right? Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent to help the people of Israel, God’s lost sheep, not the Gentiles.” But she came and worshipped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” Again, he protested, “It’s not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” “Yes, Lord,” she agreed, “but even puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Her reply seemed to astonish the Lord, blowing away any further thought of refusal. “Woman, great is your faith,” he told her. “Yo

Daily Excerpt: Jesus Is Still Passing By: With Secrets for a Victorious Life (Easterling): The Woman Who Touched Jesus

Excerpt: THE WOMAN WHO TOUCHED JESUS (Gospel account in Matthew 9:20-22; Mark 5:24-34: Luke 9:43-48)   A large crowd was following Jesus, pressing around him. A woman crept up quietly, trying to touch him. This dear lady had an internal bleeding disorder. For twelve years, she’d suffered under the care of many doctors and spent all her money to pay them. But, instead of getting better, she grew worse. She’d heard of Jesus. So, she pressed through the crowd and slipped up behind him, thinking, “If I only touch his clothes, I’ll be healed.” As soon as she touched his cloak, she felt the bleeding stop. Background This brave lady risked public humiliation by approaching Jesus unbidden. Women of her day were often not treated with dignity. She knew she would likely be ridiculed, but she was enough desperate to choose to face the consequences. The disciples would not be sympathetic. They fancied themselves to be Jesus’ palace guards, shooing the riffraff away, especially women and childre

Excerpt from Jesus Is Still Passing By, With Secrets for a Victorious Life: A Big Fish Story

This book contains 100 miracles from the Gospels -- and similar true-story miracles for today, for a total of 400 (!!) miracles described, explained, and discussed in the book, with questions for individual or group reflection. Here is one of those miracles with its modern-day counterparts: A BIG FISH STORY  (Gospel account in Luke 5:1-11)  Peter and Andrew were fishermen by trade. They’d caught thousands of fish and no doubt loved to swap fish stories with their friends, but this particular fish story topped them all. Here is what happened: One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to hear this charismatic street preacher. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge—their owners had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. Then he sat down in the boat and continued teaching the people. When he finished speaking, he said to Si

A Family Game for Easter (guest post by J. Bennett Easterling)

Image
Are you interested in moving beyond the traditional egg hunt and chocolate bunnies, finding ways to engage the children of your family in the Easter story? We’ve discovered a delightful game that both adults and kids enjoy. It’s as simple as finding some colored plastic Easter eggs—the kind that open up--and stuffing them with questions or clues surrounding the trial, crucifixion, and resurrection story. Find an Easter basket, fill it with fake grass and place the eggs inside the basket.   When everyone is seated for dinner, someone passes the basket around the table. Each person takes an egg, then take turns opening their egg and reading the scripture verse or showing the clue and telling what it has to do with Easter.\ You can be quite imaginative in stuffing the eggs, using small nails, bits of fabric, thorns, spices and other items as well as scripture verses. If the one opening the egg cannot explain how it relates to Easter, the other children are invited to answ
