Christianity and Christian Nationalism: Where They Meet—and Where They Do Not

Image
The words Christianity and Christian nationalism are often used as though they describe the same thing. They do not. There is an intersection between the two, certainly. Christian nationalism draws much of its language, symbolism, moral vocabulary, and sense of history from Christianity. Many people who identify with Christian nationalism are Christians, and some Christians embrace particular ideas associated with Christian nationalism. But the two concepts are neither identical nor inseparable. Understanding the difference requires asking a deceptively simple question: What happens when a religious faith becomes intertwined with a particular nation and its political identity? Christianity is a faith; nationalism is an identity framework At its most basic level, Christianity concerns a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Its central concerns include faith, worship, discipleship, repentance, forgiveness, love of neighbor, mercy, justice, reconciliation, and the hope of s...

Amazon, for some reason, is planning on a release on Thursday (ebook and paperback) but the paperback is already available on Barnes & Noble and at the MSI Press webstore (use coupon code FF25 for a 25% discount at MSI). Book description: Racism and the politicization of Christianity have shaped America since the colonial era, leaving divisions that continue to fracture the nation, its churches, and its communities. In Fractured Christianity: A Republic in Peril , the author draws on a lifetime of service as a federal civil servant, teacher, counselor, and pastor to examine the historical roots of these divisions and their ongoing impact on American life. More important, he offers a path toward healing grounded in a timeless biblical principle: repentance—the willingness to change one's mind, listen, and seek reconciliation. Rather than arguing over who is right or wrong, readers are challenged t...

🫁 The Breath of Contemporary Christianity: Gospel Oxygen in a Polluted Atmosphere

Image
If Christianity were an organism, its lungs would be working overtime. The breath of Scripture still moves through the body — ancient, steady, life‑giving — but the atmosphere around it has changed. The air is no longer clean. It is thick with politics, consumer appetites, algorithmic noise, and the constant churn of outrage. The organism inhales what is available, and what is available is often toxic. Some parts of the organism still know how to breathe well. Contemplative communities draw slow, deliberate breaths, refusing to let the world’s pace dictate their pulse. Monastic orders inhale silence and exhale mercy, keeping the rhythm of prayer like a heartbeat. Small house churches breathe in Scripture with the intimacy of shared air, shared meals, shared burdens. These lungs expand fully. They oxygenate the bloodstream with peace, patience, and the unhurried presence of God. They remind the organism what healthy respiration feels like. Other lungs struggle. Some gasp for atten...
