Political division doesn’t announce itself with a single dramatic event. It accumulates. It settles into the spaces between people, institutions, and expectations, and over time it becomes a kind of national drag—slowing progress, eroding trust, and reshaping how citizens see one another. The first cost is social cohesion. When political identity becomes the primary lens through which people interpret each other, ordinary disagreements harden into moral judgments. Neighbors become abstractions. Families learn to avoid certain topics. Communities lose the ability to deliberate in good faith. The shared civic “we” shrinks, replaced by smaller circles of “us” and “them.” The second cost is institutional strain. Division makes governing harder. Compromise becomes suspect. We spent a week together crammed into my small apartment. We exhausted ourselves talking about our lives and our favorite subjects--religion, psychology, and politics. I daily used up my quota of words. Many family and friends avoid talking about these subjects to avoid conflict. But we relish the give-and-take of debate. Coincidentally, the Republican National Convention was televised each night. We watched it diligently and exchanged views. Our convictions ranged across the political spectrum.
