You will never get out of it alive. ~Elbert Hubbard   Similes, metaphors, hyperbole—your child has probably used these figures of speech whether she was aware of it or not! Using this kind of language can really spice up your child’s writing. Below is a list of some common figures of speech and their definitions. Read them over with your child. Encourage her to look for them in the books she reads and challenge her to use them in her own writing.   Simile : points out a likeness between two different objects or ideas by using a connective word (usually like or as ); example: The water swept the sand like a giant broom.
