What Is Sufism?
Sufism is often described as the heart of Islam — not a separate religion, but the inward dimension of faith that seeks direct experience of the Divine. Where theology explains, Sufism experiences. Where law defines, Sufism transforms. It is less about belief and more about becoming.
The Essence of Sufism
At its core, Sufism is a path of love and remembrance. The Arabic word tasawwuf (Sufism) comes from suf, meaning “wool,” recalling the simple garments worn by early mystics who renounced luxury to live in spiritual poverty before God. But the simplicity was never about clothing — it was about purity of heart.
Sufis seek to polish the mirror of the heart until it reflects divine light clearly. The goal is not escape from the world but awakening within it — to see the sacred in every face, every breath, every moment.
The Journey Inward
Sufism teaches that the human being is a microcosm of the universe. To know oneself is to know the Divine. The journey begins with discipline — prayer, fasting, service, and remembrance (dhikr). Over time, these practices quiet the ego, allowing the deeper self to emerge.
The stages of the path often include:
Sharia – the outer path of ethical living
Tariqa – the inner path of spiritual practice
Haqiqa – the realization of truth
Marifa – intimate knowledge of God
Each stage is not a ladder but a spiral — returning again and again to humility, love, and awareness.
The Language of Love
Sufi poets like Rumi, Hafiz, and Ibn Arabi gave voice to this inner journey through the language of love. Their verses speak of longing, union, and the paradox of separation — metaphors for the soul’s relationship with the Divine. When Rumi writes, “The wound is the place where the Light enters you,” he is describing transformation through surrender.
Community and Transmission
Sufism is traditionally transmitted through orders (tariqas) led by teachers (sheikhs) who guide disciples in spiritual practice. The relationship between teacher and student is not hierarchical but heart‑based — a companionship in awakening.
Sufism Today
In the modern world, Sufism continues to inspire seekers across cultures and faiths. Its emphasis on compassion, tolerance, and inner peace resonates deeply in times of division. Yet authentic Sufism remains rooted in discipline and devotion — not merely poetry or philosophy, but lived practice.
The Heart of the Matter
To ask “What is Sufism?” is to ask “What is the heart’s capacity for love?” It is the art of remembering who we truly are beneath the noise of the world — beings of light, drawn toward the Source that created us.
Sufism does not promise answers. It offers presence. It does not demand belief. It invites awakening. It does not end in knowledge. It begins in love.

Book Description
This book contains 29 stories originally articulated in Arabic by Bashir Al-Bani, Orator of the Grand Mosque of Damascus and one of the masters of the Sufi Naqishbandi Order. They have been compiled, rendered in English, and introduced by Dr. Omar Imady, professor of humanities and political science. The stories are often comic but often deep in implication. While one story may address the motives underlying human interaction, another story may address how hidden principles guide the way in which our lives unfold. A delicate concern for the value, indeed the sacredness, of human value permeates all the stories. This concern is explicated through metaphors, the purest vocabulary of Islamic humanism.
