Women's History Month: Books about Violence against Women

Image
As Women's History Month concludes, here are some books that may be of interest; they reflect hope in the aftermath of various kinds of violence against women. They also point out ways that women can manage violence when it appears -- survive it and recover from it. Healing from Incest ( Geri Henderson ) In speaking about Healing from Incest, Susan J. Lewis, Ph.D., J.D., Healing writes: “"Brave, profound, touching, healing. This well-written, honest book takes the reader inside the complexities of the therapeutic healing process from the patient and therapist's unique perspective. It is the story of hard work, hope, commitment and recovery!" Healing from Incest tells the journey of a victim-turned-survivor, working with her therapist to find healing. Readers are pulled into the therapeutic process as Henderson relates her conversations and feelings as a victim of child abuse and Emerton interprets those feelings and describes interventions. Excerpt from Healing from Incest (Henderson and Emerton): On the Writing of This Book: An Unusual Collaboration

On the Writing of This Book: An Unusual Collaboration  During the final months of therapy with Seanne, more than ten years ago, I shared the idea of this book with her. Back then, it was just a curious “what if” sort of notion. I thought, “What if someone who could write and who has thought about this recovery process were to collaborate with her therapist on a book?” My initial thought was about how helpful it would have been for me to have had the chance to read such a book. But there was no way to start anything immediately, and it was clear that the idea sounded a bit strange to Seanne though she always expressed support. After the conclusion of my therapy with her, I moved away and became very involved in my professional career as well as moving on to another therapist. I did revisit the idea of a book from time to time and three or four years later began to write. I approached Seanne again about the possibility of our collaboration. The problem was that other than collabo

Daily Excerpt: Healing from Incest (Henderson and Emerton) - Light at the End of the Tunnel

Today's excerpt comes from Healing from Incest (Henderosn & Emerton) -  Light at the End of the Tunnel   Self-Assessment I have a real hesitancy to believe that I can gauge where I am emotionally with more accuracy than in the past. Still, I thought it might be useful to try to explain what the headspace of a 60-something is like after years of therapeutic work and figuring out how to live and how to have faith. I’ve been able to live a number of years where dealing with one issue or another from the past does not have to be a priority every day. At the same time, I realize that a “Gold Star” is not going to be awarded for having achieved perfection in all areas or having resolved all issues. I also know it is dangerous to think that I will not have to deal with anything troubling again. I understand that were I to continue in intense therapy, the things I could or perhaps should deal with would be never-ending, but I suspect that almost anyone, whatever the past experiences

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: How Books Get Published -- Anecdotes from the Trenches

(photo by Frank Perez) It is Tuesday. Time to tall turkey. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side. Ever wonder how books get to be accepted for publication? There is often more to any author's story than non-authors and not-yet-published authors would image.  Yes, of course, every publisher has the normal channel of proposal reading and acceptance based on the quality of the proposal, the "fit" of the book, the quality of the writing, and the perceived marketability, typically based on the author's platform. But...some books come into being in some other ways. Here are a few from the MSI Press e
