Morning Prayer: Who was St. Gregory?
Saint Gregory — Gregory the Great — was one of the most influential popes in Christian history, remembered for his humility, his care for the poor, and his steady leadership during a time of famine, plague, and political chaos. Gregory was born around 540 in Rome, into a noble family with deep Christian roots. He rose quickly in public life and became prefect of Rome by age thirty — the highest civil office in the city. Yet he felt called to a life of prayer and simplicity. He left public office, turned his family estate into a monastery, and embraced the quiet discipline of monastic life. Gregory’s gifts were too great to remain hidden. He was sent as a papal ambassador to Constantinople, and later — during a devastating plague — was elected pope by popular acclaim.
