Caturday: When the Outdoors Beckons
How do you keep rescued feral cats (used to the outdoors) from escaping back into the wild in a many-doored active-resident house?
Keeping rescued feral cats from escaping back into the wild, especially in a busy household with many doors, can be challenging. Here are some strategies to help:
Create a Safe Space: Designate a specific room or area as the cats' safe space. Provide them with food, water, litter boxes, and cozy hiding spots. This will help them feel secure and reduce their desire to escape.
Gradual Introduction: Gradually introduce the cats to the rest of the house. Start by allowing them to explore one room at a time under supervision. This will help them acclimate to their new environment.
Supervise Doorways: Be vigilant when doors are open. Ensure that someone is always monitoring doors that lead outside to prevent accidental escapes. Consider using baby gates to create barriers.
Use Enrichment Activities: Provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep the cats entertained and content indoors. Toys, scratching posts, and interactive play can help.
Secure Windows and Screens: Make sure all windows and screens are secure and intact. Cats can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, so check for any potential escape routes.
Consider a Catio: If possible, create an enclosed outdoor space or "catio" where the cats can safely experience the outdoors without the risk of escaping.
Behavioral Training: Use positive reinforcement to train the cats to come when called or to stay away from doors. Treats and praise can be effective motivators.
Microchip and Collar: Ensure the cats are microchipped and wear a collar with identification tags. This will increase the chances of them being returned if they do manage to escape.
Family Education: Educate all household members about the importance of keeping doors closed and being cautious around the cats.
Consistency and patience are key when helping feral cats adapt to indoor life. With time and effort, they can learn to feel safe and comfortable in their new home.
