Know
the Rules
Be sure you
put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.
~Abraham Lincoln
Do you know your child’s classroom
rules? Just like at home, every classroom has them. Teachers know it is very
important for children to know and understand the rules and expectations, but
children cannot follow rules or achieve the teacher’s expectations if they are
unaware of them. Many teachers have found that involving the children in making
the rules helps the children feel invested in the classroom and more likely to
remember and follow the rules. After rules have been established, good teachers
know that the rules must be practiced
and children must be reminded of the
rules and expectations many times during the year.
In the beginning of the school year, you are likely to find your child’s classroom rules posted somewhere in her classroom. Perhaps your child came home with a classroom contract that you and she had to read over and sign. If none of this sounds familiar to you, perhaps a talk with the teacher is in order so you can be aware of the expectations the teacher has for your child.
Understanding your child’s classroom rules will help avoid conflict and confusion. By supporting the classroom rules and expectations, you and the school will be working together to create the best atmosphere for learning for your child.
