Caturday: A Tribute to Cat Ladies on International Women's Day

Happy International Women’s Day to all the incredible cat ladies who make the world a better place, one whisker at a time!

Throughout history, women and cats have shared a special connection. From ancient times when feline companions were revered in Egyptian society (with Cleopatra herself said to have adored them), to the modern-day cat rescuer dedicating her time and resources to saving stray kitties, the bond between women and cats is deep and undeniable.

For years, the term “cat lady” carried a negative connotation, but today, women everywhere are reclaiming it as a badge of honor. Loving and caring for animals is a sign of strength, responsibility, and deep empathy. If being a “cat lady” means showing kindness, offering a home to those in need, and embracing the companionship of feline friends, then it’s something to be celebrated!

Let’s not forget the remarkable female cats who have made history. From Félicette, the first cat in space, to Tama, the stationmaster cat in Japan who helped revive a train station’s economy, female felines have left their mark in unique and inspiring ways.

And then, of course, there is our very own Sula, parish cat at Old Mission San Juan Bautista for 15 years. Though she crossed the Rainbow Bridge nearly three years ago, while here, she helped dozens, if not hundreds of people, had a following of more than 1000, and "wrote" six books published by MSI Press (five in English and one in Spanish). Now buried on the Mission grounds, where her grave and story is a feature in every tour, she lives on in people's memory's and her books.

On this day, let’s celebrate not only the women who change lives but also the incredible female cats who charm, heal, and inspire us.
