Precerpt from Raising Happy Cat Families (Norwood) - Greeting and Introducing a New Cat

Precerpt (excerpt prior to publication) from Raising Happy Cat families by Luna Norwood

Snyezhka, a Siamese-Tabby blend, was an easy rescue. Night after night on our house surveillance camera, we would see this small tan cat stop by our downstairs door, where we left food for the street cats, and eat with relish. One night, I was in our basement area in the early hours of the morning when Snyezhka came up our hill and to the downstairs door for her nightly feast. As she ate, two large tom cats pounced on her, clearly ready to mate her. But she was not in agreement, and she fought them off. Half their size, with twice their spirit. I opened the door, quickly grabbed her, and brought her inside.

She did not fight me. She appeared relieved to be safe from her suitors. She slept on a chair in the basement room all night. I placed a disposable litter pan near her, the kind that come with a removable lid, seeded it with some poop from one of our litter robots, and she used it a couple of times that night, as if she had always been a house cat (she had not). I spent the night with her, and she quickly became used to me.

The next day, I took her upstairs to meet the other cats. We were fortunate in this case. Our beta cat, Happy Cat, himself a street rescue just a couple of months earlier, did a little happy dance when he saw her and set himself to grooming her. Apparently, he had protected her on the street before they both found themselves in our little cat family.

Happy Cat introduced Snyezhka to the other cats. Although the vet sometimes called her “grumpy cat,” she had a sweeter disposition than most Siamese and, after sticking closely to Happy Cat initially, soon became a well-integrated member of the Leaver cat family.

So, how did Snyezhka integrate so easily (as most of our cats have)? Thanks to Happy Cat! As the beta cat, he nurtured her. As her previous companion on the street, he showed her the ropes. And as the best pal at the time of Murjan, the alpha cat, he greased the rails for Murjan to accept her. Once Murjan accepted a cat and assigned it a place in the hierarchy, all the other cats also accepted the new cat and his/her assigned “rank.”
