Hidden Treasure

Little strokes fell great oaks
 ~Ben Franklin

Every little thing you do with your child to practice reading skills is a great help to him. Every time you make an effort to find fun ways to do this, it makes learning to read (or becomimg a better reader) much more meaningful and motivational. In Part 1, Idea #20 explains how to play a game we made up called “Hidden Treasure.” If you have not yet played, take a few minutes to play this easy and motivational game and reinforce just about every area of the curriculum. Of course, this includes reading.

If your child is reading a tough informational book or studying from a textbook, you can help him learn to read either high-frequency words (the most common words) from the text or new, vocabulary words—anything he is having a tough time reading. The first step is to sit down and listen to him read the text. Make note of any and all words that give him trouble. Later, write these words on note cards. Try to include some not-so-tough words, too, so not every word in the game is new and difficult. Use these word cards to play “Hidden Treasure.” On your turns, when you pick out a word card, model how you figured out and note spelling patterns etc. that will help your child remember it, too.

After you’ve played the game, have him read the book again. Playing this game should make him more fluent. Every chance you have to make learning fun helps!
