May the Fourth Be with You, Writer! The Writer's Force: Trust It, Follow It, Finish What You Start

May the Fourth [Force] Be with You! On May 4th—an unofficial holiday beloved by Star Wars fans—we hear it everywhere. But what if this force wasn’t just for Jedi? What if writers, too, were guided by something deep, mysterious, and powerful?

The best writers I know don’t just craft words. They tap into an inner current, a kind of creative gravity that pulls them forward even when the path is unclear. Like the Jedi, they operate from a sense of intuition, discipline, and purpose. Writing is not just output—it’s channeling.

The Force Within

Jedi don’t always rely on logic or data. They close their eyes, breathe deeply, and trust the Force. Writers have a similar relationship with their inner compass. Some call it a muse, others call it flow—but all serious writers know the sensation: something greater than ourselves moves through the work when we stop trying to control it and start listening.

That doesn’t mean writing is easy. The Force doesn’t write the book for you. But it does help you make unexpected leaps—trusting a strange character who suddenly takes over the narrative, rewriting a scene that never sat right, or abandoning a safe idea for something riskier and more alive.

Discipline Over Drama

The Jedi train. They meditate, study, and master their tools. Writers do too—when we show up daily, revise without ego, and keep learning the craft. The Force only works for those who prepare to receive it.

Even the most inspired idea won’t become a finished manuscript without structure, deadlines, or (let’s be honest) rewrites at midnight. Jedi stay the course. So do writers.

Risk and Resistance

The most important choices in Star Wars come down to gut instinct: Luke turning off his targeting computer. Rey accepting her lineage. Obi-Wan letting go. Writers often face that same moment of tension—between control and faith.

Writing asks us to leap, to listen to the strange pulse that says, “This is the story you need to tell, even if it scares you.” That leap can feel irrational. And yet, it’s where the best work comes from.

Serving Something Greater

For Jedi, the Force is not just power—it’s responsibility. Writing, at its best, serves something greater than ego: truth, healing, insight, justice, or beauty. Writers don’t just tell stories—they hold up mirrors, offer lifelines, and light candles in the dark.

So this May the 4th, consider this: if you’re a writer, you’re already on your own kind of Jedi journey. The Force is not out there—it’s in you. Trust it. Follow it. And see your work through to the end.

May the Force—and your words—be with you.
