Writing for Reading & Reading for Writing

Sometimes fabulous things are intertwined. When they are, you just can’t lose. The same is true for many academic areas. So, if you’ve ever wondered how you can help your child to become a better reader or a better writer, here is a sure-fire strategy: Read and write!

When a child reads a variety of material (and often), she can become a better writer because she is gaining more command over the power and beauty of language. She discovers the multitude of ways in which words can affect people and evoke emotion, as well as the variety of ways and reasons to write.

When she writes often, for a variety of authentic and meaningful reasons, she becomes a better reader. She is learning to read her own words with feeling and expression, finding her own voice, and recognizing voices in other pieces she reads. She is also realizing that writing, just like reading, is done for the purpose of gathering meaning.

If your child needs practice with writing but loves to read even more, let her! If you know she needs to develop reading skills but resists reading every day, encourage her to write. These two skills reinforce one another beautifully and effortlessly. You can reinforce them, too.
