Tip #147 from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents (McKinley, Trombly) - Write a Test
Today's tip for parents from two talented teachers comes from 365 Teacher Secrets for Parents by Cindy McKinley Alder and Patti Trombly.
#147
Write a Test
Even if we study to old age we shall not finish learning
~Chinese Proverb
Have you ever wanted to switch places with someone and do their job for the day? Your child has probably experienced similar feelings. He may wish to be a parent for a day and have fun making and enforcing the rules. He may even dream of being the teacher and making decisions such as a “no homework ever” policy!
You can give your child the feeling of being in charge by assigning him in this important “teacher task.” After he has finished reading a book, give him the opportunity to design his own test for the book. No doubt, he will try to be silly and create a question such as “What is the name of the book?” If this happens, help him to design more in-depth questions by challenging him to write questions even his teacher would have to think about! Tell him you will take his test, and so he should try to stump you.
Encourage him to include many different kinds of questions in his test such as:
● true and false;
● multiple choice;
● open-ended; and/or
● essay.
He should create an answer sheet to go along with his test, thereby requiring that he really comprehend the information. He can then use his test to help him study for an upcoming real test, share with his friends (who have read the same book) to help them study, or present it to his teacher. Who knows, his teacher may even use a question or two on the real test!
