🎨 The Colors of February: A Month in Shades and Whispers

I was born in a blizzard in the middle of February in northern New England. February to me is a month blanketed by snow, by white. But there are more colors to February if one cares to look.

White, of course.
The hush of snow. The blank page. The breath before a kiss.
February begins in silence — frost on the window, milk in the sky, the quiet dignity of winter’s last stand.

Red, inevitably.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t ask permission. It arrives with roses, heart-shaped boxes, and the blush of risk.
Red is love, yes — but also blood, courage, and the fire that keeps us warm.

Blue, presidential and proud.
President’s Day brings out the bunting — stars and stripes, speeches and stovepipe hats.
It’s the blue of history, of ink on parchment, of cold truth and civic hope.

Pink, the color of candy and compromise.
Not quite red, not quite white — pink is the giggle in the grocery aisle, the card from your aunt, the lipstick you almost wore.

Gray, the color of waiting.
February is not spring, not quite winter. It’s the hallway between seasons.
Gray is the sky that can’t decide. The coat you keep wearing. The mood that lingers.

Gold, if you’re lucky.
Some Februaries sparkle — Mardi Gras beads, Lunar New Year lanterns, the glint of possibility.
Gold is the promise that March will come.

Purple, for those who remember.
It’s the color of bruises and bravery. Of Black History Month and quiet dignity.
Purple is the echo of stories not yet told.

So yes, February is white. But it’s also red, blue, pink, gray, gold, and purple.
It’s a month of contrasts — short on days, long on meaning.
A palette of love and legacy, snow and stubbornness, memory and maybe.
