🐾 How My Cat Made Me a Better Mayor
I never set out to be a mayor. But then I watched my cat run the household with absolute confidence, and I realized: I’ve been studying local governance all along.
Here’s what my cat taught me about leadership, diplomacy, and the art of keeping a community running smoothly.
Constituents want to be seen. My cat greets every resident — feline, human, or passing spider — with the same solemn acknowledgment. A slow blink is his version of a handshake. I learned that sometimes a nod, a glance, or a “I see you” is all a citizen needs.
Hold office hours. My cat has designated times when he is available for petitions: usually when I’m trying to read, type, or sleep. I adopted the principle, minus the timing. A mayor must be accessible, even if the constituents show up with odd requests.
Infrastructure matters. My cat inspects every walkway, windowsill, and cardboard box for structural integrity. He reports deficiencies by sitting on them. I learned to do the same — minus the sitting — and suddenly potholes, loose hinges, and wobbly chairs became my jurisdiction.
Budget wisely. My cat allocates resources with ruthless clarity:
80% naps
15% snacks
5% chaos I learned to prioritize rest, nourishment, and the occasional strategic disruption.
Conflict resolution is an art. When two cats argue, he steps between them, tail high, radiating calm authority. No words, no drama. Just presence. I learned that sometimes the best intervention is simply showing up with steady energy.
Transparency builds trust. My cat never hides his intentions. If he wants something, he walks directly toward it with purpose. If he’s planning mischief, he announces it with a look. I learned that clarity — even mischievous clarity — keeps a community grounded.
Ceremony matters. Every morning he performs the same ritual: stretch, yawn, patrol, breakfast. It’s civic liturgy. I learned that people, like cats, thrive on rhythms that remind them they belong to something larger.
Lead with dignity, nap with abandon. A mayor must project steadiness, but also know when to collapse into a sunbeam and recharge. My cat excels at both. I’m still learning.
My cat didn’t make me a politician. He made me a better mayor — one who listens, observes, protects the vulnerable, and understands that sometimes the most important thing you can do for your community is simply be present, calm, and ready to serve.
