Celebrating International Hug Your Cat Day: A Tail-Wagging Tribute

Every year on May 30, cat lovers worldwide have an excuse—if they needed one—to shower their feline friends with affection. It’s International Hug Your Cat Day, a time to celebrate the special bond we share with our whiskered companions. But as any seasoned cat guardian knows, not every cat is keen on hugs.

To Hug or Not to Hug? That Is the Question

Cats, those enigmatic creatures, have an array of preferences when it comes to receiving affection. Some will gladly nuzzle into a warm embrace, purring away contentedly. Others? Not so much. If your cat stiffens up or struggles when hugged, don’t take it personally—they’re just asserting their comfort zone. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways to make them feel loved.

Finding Their Sweet Spot

Many cats adore belly rubs, while others treat them as an act of war. Ear scratches? Those can melt even the most aloof feline. And if you’re looking for a nearly foolproof spot to make a cat blissfully happy—try scratching where their tail meets their body. That little area seems universally adored in the feline world!

Murjan: A Cat Who Preferred Conversation

Then there are cats like Murjan, who didn’t seek belly rubs, hugs, or ear scratches. What Murjan loved most was simply sitting with his human and chatting. He could talk—oh, he could talk—for what felt like an eternity. He didn’t need touch to feel connected; he just needed presence.

Make It Special, Make It Yours

International Hug Your Cat Day isn’t necessarily about hugs—it’s about recognizing what makes your cat feel loved. Whether it’s a cozy cuddle, a gentle scratch, a heartfelt conversation, or simply giving them space, find the way your cat prefers to bond and make May 30 special for both of you.

So go ahead—celebrate your feline in the way they love best. And if your cat’s not a hugger, don’t worry. Love comes in many forms, even if it’s just sitting side by side in comfortable silence.

What does your cat prefer? A hug, a scratch, or maybe just a long-winded conversation like Murjan?
