Morning Prayer: Sing to the Lord

The daily call to “sing to the Lord” in Morning Prayer isn’t just poetic—it’s theological and formative. It appears in nearly every version of the Christian morning office (from the Psalms through Benedictine and Anglican traditions) because it expresses what morning worship is meant to do: awaken the soul to praise before anything else happens.

Here’s the deeper significance:

1. Creation’s Rhythm

Morning is the hour when creation itself “sings”—birds, light, wind. The exhortation aligns human voices with that natural chorus. Psalm 92 begins, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High.” Singing situates us within the rhythm of creation’s praise.

2. Reorientation

Before the day’s work and noise, singing re‑centers the heart. In Hebrew thought, song is not entertainment but alignment—it tunes the human spirit to God’s steadfastness. The act of singing is a bodily form of prayer, engaging breath, posture, and emotion.

3. Communal Memory

Morning Prayer often includes the Venite (Psalm 95): “O come, let us sing unto the Lord.” This was Israel’s daily temple summons. To sing was to remember covenant—God as Creator, Shepherd, and Rock. The repetition keeps the community’s memory alive.

4. Transformation

In Christian theology, song is the language of resurrection. Morning symbolizes new life; singing is the first act of that life. Augustine said, “To sing is to pray twice.” The voice becomes the instrument of joy, even when the heart feels heavy.

5. Continuity across faiths

  • In Hebrew prayer, the Psalms themselves are sung; the exhortation is ancient.

  • In Islam, while formal prayer (ṣalāh) is recited rather than sung, the adhān (call to prayer) and tajwīd (melodic Qur’anic recitation) fulfill a similar role—beauty offered to God at dawn.

So when Morning Prayer says “Sing to the Lord,” it’s not a command to perform—it’s an invitation to join the world’s first act of the day: praise that acknowledges God as the source of light, breath, and renewal.

Morning Prayer posts inspired by Being Catholic in Troubled Times (Dennis Ortman)

Book Description:

These are times that try our souls. This book is addressed to all, not just Catholics, who search for deeper meaning in tough times. Our age is marked by division and alienation. We long for some message that will bring peace to our world and our hearts.

This book suggests that the Catholic faith can provide strength in these troubled times. The word "catholic" means "all-embracing, universal." Nothing is excluded in the catholic mind. The truth that sets us free can be found everywhere, especially in unexpected places. It is often hidden in plain sight. In our darkest moments, we find new light and life. When we are most despairing, a ray of hope shines through.

Dr. Dennis Ortman, former priest and current psychologist, is the author of Anger Anonymous, Anxiety Anonymous, Depression Anonymous, Being Catholic in Troubled Times, and Life, Liberty, and COVID-19.
