Why do nearly all cultures divide themselves into "us" and "them"?


Cultures divide into “us” and “them” because belonging is both a psychological need and a social strategy. The instinct to form groups is ancient — it helped early humans survive by creating trust circles in a dangerous world. But once survival became more secure, the same instinct began shaping identity, politics, and morality.

Here’s how it works across levels of human life:

🧠 Psychological Roots

Humans are wired to seek patterns and predict safety. “Us” means familiar, safe, trustworthy. “Them” means unknown, unpredictable, possibly threatening. The mind simplifies complexity by sorting people into categories — a shortcut that once protected us but now often divides us unnecessarily.

🌍 Cultural and Historical Reinforcement

Every culture builds stories about who “we” are. Those stories give coherence and pride, but they also define boundaries. Myths, flags, rituals, and languages all reinforce belonging. When those boundaries harden, difference becomes danger. History shows that societies under stress — economic, political, or existential — tighten their definitions of “us” and expand the list of “them.”

🏛️ Institutional Incentives

Governments, religions, and corporations often benefit from clear divisions. “Us” and “them” can mobilize loyalty, votes, donations, or obedience. It’s easier to unite people against an enemy than around nuance. So institutions amplify the instinct for cohesion by contrast — we know who we are because we know who we’re not.

💬 Modern Amplifiers

Social media and algorithmic feeds intensify tribalism. They reward outrage and identity signaling. The more polarized the content, the more engagement it generates. The ancient instinct for belonging meets the modern machinery of attention — and the result is a global echo chamber.

🌿 The Way Forward

The antidote isn’t to erase difference but to expand empathy. “Us” and “them” dissolve when people share stories, meals, and vulnerability. Philosophy, art, and dialogue remind us that identity is porous — that every “them” contains a potential “us.”

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
