How My Cat Made Me a Better Lawyer

 



My cat has never billed a single hour, never drafted a motion, and certainly never attended a CLE. Yet somehow she has become the most influential mentor in my legal career. She runs a full continuing‑education program in this house, and I am—regrettably but undeniably—her star pupil.

Lesson 1: Stealth is a litigation skill. She can cross a room without making a sound, materializing beside me like a furry apparition. I learned to do the same when slipping into court with a stack of last‑minute exhibits. A quiet entrance is sometimes the most strategic one.

Lesson 2: Cross‑examination begins with curiosity. My cat interrogates every grocery bag, every closed door, every suspicious rustle. She does not assume; she investigates. I adopted her method: assume nothing, inspect everything, and never let a fact escape without being sniffed—metaphorically, of course.

Lesson 3: Negotiation is 90% posture. When she wants something, she sits three feet away, fixes me with a steady gaze, and waits. No whining. No theatrics. Just unwavering feline confidence. I now use the same technique in settlement conferences: calm presence, direct eye contact, and the patience to let the other side blink first.

Lesson 4: Appeals require persistence. If I deny her a second breakfast, she files an immediate appeal—sometimes multiple appeals—until she gets a ruling in her favor. She is relentless, but polite. I admire her tenacity. I’ve incorporated it into my own practice, minus the meowing.

Lesson 5: Self‑care is mandatory. She naps like it’s a constitutional right. She stretches with the seriousness of an Olympic athlete. She takes breaks without apology. I’m learning. Slowly.

Lesson 6: Dignity is a strategic asset. When she miscalculates a jump and lands in a heap, she immediately pretends she meant to do it. That level of composure is invaluable after a hearing that goes sideways. Regroup. Smooth your whiskers. Proceed.

In short: my cat is the senior partner, and I’m just trying to keep up. She may never practice law, but she has absolutely improved mine.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
