  People think strength lives in the biceps or the quads or whatever part of the body the fitness magazines are selling this month. But strength doesn’t start in the muscles. It starts in the mind — in the quiet moment when your nervous system decides whether to let you use what you already have. I learned this the hard way, twice, by misreading weight stacks. Once, I hopped onto my nephew’s lat machine, glanced at the plates, saw “35 lb,” and thought, oh, that’s light. I pulled a few easy reps and commented that it felt like nothing. Later I realized it was 35 on each side — seventy pounds. Had I known that, I would have braced differently, moved cautiously, maybe even apologized for being out of practice.
