Morning Prayer: Who was St. Gregory?

 

Saint Gregory — Gregory the Great — was one of the most influential popes in Christian history, remembered for his humility, his care for the poor, and his steady leadership during a time of famine, plague, and political chaos.

Gregory was born around 540 in Rome, into a noble family with deep Christian roots. He rose quickly in public life and became prefect of Rome by age thirty — the highest civil office in the city. Yet he felt called to a life of prayer and simplicity. He left public office, turned his family estate into a monastery, and embraced the quiet discipline of monastic life.

Gregory’s gifts were too great to remain hidden. He was sent as a papal ambassador to Constantinople, and later — during a devastating plague — was elected pope by popular acclaim. As Pope Gregory I (590–604), he reorganized the Church’s care for the poor, distributed food from Church lands, and personally ensured that families too ashamed to beg received help. He also sent missionaries to England, strengthened the Church’s unity, and wrote extensively on prayer, pastoral care, and the spiritual life.

Gregory is remembered as a man of deep interior stillness, even while carrying immense responsibility. He prayed in what he called “the silence of the heart.” His life shows that prayer is not an escape from the world’s troubles but a way of meeting them with courage, compassion, and clarity.

He was, in short:

A saint who began each day rooted in quiet trust, who carried the burdens of a suffering city with a contemplative heart, and who taught that all Christian leadership begins with listening to God.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
