  Of all the differences between male and female aging, changes in skin and appearance may be among the most visible—and among the most culturally loaded. There is a biological reason women may feel that aging suddenly speeds up in their 50s. Men and women do not lose collagen in exactly the same pattern. Men tend to experience a relatively gradual decline in collagen throughout adult life. Women, by contrast, generally maintain collagen at a higher level through much of their reproductive years. With menopause, however, that pattern changes dramatically. Estrogen plays an important role in maintaining skin structure. As estrogen levels fall during the menopausal transition, collagen production and skin thickness decline. Research has found that women can experience a substantial loss of skin collagen during the early postmenopausal years, followed by a slower rate of decline.
