🐾 Caturday Spotlight: The Sokoke — and Our Queen Kokee
Most people have never met a Sokoke. They’re one of the rarest cat types in the world — semi‑feral in origin, fiercely intelligent, and famously selective about their affections. And then there’s Kokee, our resident Sokoke sovereign, who has decided that I am her chosen human… and absolutely no one else.
🌿 A Breed Built on Instinct
Sokokes come from the coastal forests of Kenya, and they’ve kept much of their wild wiring:
- hyper‑alert
- quick to react
- independent to the core
- deeply bonded to one person
They’re not “high‑strung” — they’re high‑attuned. Always listening. Always scanning. Always ready to move.
👑 Kokee’s Rules of Engagement
Kokee has settled into the household, but she has made her terms very clear:
- Only I may touch her. Everyone else is beneath her notice.
- Do not pick her up. She comes to me when she decides the moment is right.
- Evening cuddles only. That’s when the world is quiet enough for her to let her guard down.
- Belly rubs are a privilege. She’ll roll over, give me a minute or two of bliss, then bolt away to discharge the vulnerability.
- Lap time is sacred. If I try to type while she’s on me, she slaps my hand like a tiny, striped hall monitor.
She startles at every little sound — even mid‑cuddle — sometimes darting away, sometimes running off entirely. But she always circles back, hops into my lap, and resumes her rightful place.
💛 A Love Both Wild and Loyal
What looks like skittishness is really her Sokoke instincts doing their job.
What looks like aloofness is actually fierce loyalty — but reserved for one person only.
Kokee is a cat who loves on her own terms, trusts on her own timeline, and gives affection with the intensity of a creature who still remembers the forest.
And honestly?
It’s an honor to be chosen.
