🐾 Caturday: The Nightly Sleep Parade
Every cat sleeps with their human for a reason — but in my house, the reasons are as varied as the cats themselves. Bedtime isn’t just bedtime. It’s a process, a queue, and occasionally a negotiation between species of wildly different sizes.
JackJack: The Dedicated Bedtime Technician
JackJack is the most affectionate of the crew, but also the most professional. He waits — patiently, politely, and with the solemnity of a cat who takes his job seriously — until I am fully settled on my incline. Only then does he climb aboard, arrange himself on the natural “shelf” created by my sleeping position, and begin his shift.
JackJack does not sleep with me. JackJack commits to me for the night.
He is tiny, but he has the heart of a weighted blanket.
Moo: The Morning Hostile Takeover
Moo would like to sleep with me, but only if it involves evicting JackJack at dawn.
He arrives in the morning like a large, furry corporate raider: “Good, good, you’ve kept the seat warm. Move.”
JackJack, being small and diplomatic, simply yields the territory. Moo, being the size of a small cow (or at least a medium‑sized ottoman), attempts to climb into my lap.
Physics says no. He slops over all sides like a cat trying to occupy a beanbag chair made of gravity. He slides off, disappointed, dignity slightly dented.
But he tries again tomorrow.
Kokee: The Sokoke Who Forgot She’s a Sokoke
Kokee only sleeps with me when I’m awake — which is very on‑brand for a Sokoke, except for the part where she actually does it.
She climbs onto my chest, melts into my lap, and purrs herself into a deep, trusting sleep. This is the same cat who wakes instantly if someone enters the room, but with me she goes boneless.
She is the contradiction that every former street cat eventually becomes: hyper‑vigilant with the world, soft as pudding with her person.
Tissu: The Tortie Who Requires Contact at All Times
Tissu is a lap sleeper by preference, but she is flexible. If the lap is unavailable, she will sleep beside me while I work, her back pressed firmly against my leg.
It’s not optional. It’s not negotiable. It’s simply the rule: we touch.
She’s a daytime sleeper with me, not a nighttime one — unless I fall asleep on the couch. Then she materializes instantly, as if summoned by the sound of unconsciousness.
🐾 So what does it mean when a cat sleeps with you?
In this house, it means:
JackJack trusts me enough to clock in for the night shift.
Moo loves me but also loves turf acquisition.
Kokee feels safe enough to let her guard down.
Tissu believes physical contact is a constitutional right.
Every cat has their own reason. Every reason is valid. And every night, I get a different configuration of whiskers, paws, and personal space violations.
