Caturday: Food: Wet or Dry?


Some topics in cat care are endlessly debated, and this one sits right at the top. Wet food or dry food — which is better, when, and for whom? The answer isn’t a single rule. It’s a constellation of needs, habits, health quirks, and feline opinions (which, as we know, can override all logic).

Hydration: The Wet Food Advantage

Cats are desert-evolved creatures with a famously low thirst drive. Many simply won’t drink enough water on their own. Wet food steps in as a hydration hero.

  • Great for:

    • Seniors

    • Cats prone to urinary crystals or kidney disease

    • Cats who rarely drink from a bowl

  • Why it matters: Moisture-rich meals help keep urine dilute, kidneys supported, and hydration steady.

For some cats, wet food isn’t just a preference — it’s a medical strategy.

Dental Health & Convenience: The Dry Food Argument

Dry food is often praised for convenience: easy to store, easy to measure, easy to leave out. It can also support dental health a little, though not nearly as much as people think.

  • Great for:

    • Cats who graze throughout the day

    • Busy households

    • Cats who enjoy crunching (some truly do)

  • Caveat: Dry kibble alone does not prevent dental disease. It may help reduce plaque slightly, but brushing or dental treats do the real work.

Metabolism, Weight, and Satiety

Wet food tends to be lower in calories per ounce and higher in protein and moisture. Dry food is calorie-dense and easy to overfeed.

  • Wet food: Helps with weight management and keeps cats feeling full.

  • Dry food: Useful for underweight cats or those who need extra calories.

Age & Health Considerations

  • Kittens: Often thrive on a mix — wet for hydration and palatability, dry for free-choice nibbling.

  • Adults: Can do well on either, depending on health and lifestyle.

  • Seniors: Usually benefit from wet food because of hydration, softer texture, and easier digestion.

And Then There Are the Cats Who Decide for Themselves

Some cats read all the research, consider all the arguments, and then… refuse to eat anything except the one specific kibble or the one specific pâté.

They will starve themselves before compromising. They will stage hunger strikes. They will glare at you from the top of the fridge like tiny, furry union organizers.

And honestly? Sometimes the best diet is the one your cat will actually eat.

The Real Answer

The best choice is the one that fits your cat’s health, your household’s rhythm, and your cat’s very strong opinions. Many households end up with a hybrid approach: wet food for meals, dry food for grazing, and flexibility for the cat who changes preferences every six months.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold. Easy to calculate, easy to predict income, and always standardized, no surprises or overestimations. Net refers to what is leftover after expenses. Gross revenue gets adjusted by a number of expenses: printing costs, printer set-up fees, shipping costs, handling fees, distributor percentage of sales (typically, 40%-55% per book), distributors' initial and continuing catalogue listing costs (without which online ...
