Most authors imagine their legacy as a shelf of books and a trail of readers. But the truth is more intricate: authors live on through the people who read them, teach them, and carry their ideas forward — sometimes long after the author’s own voice has gone silent.

Boris Shekhtman’s How to Improve Your Foreign Language Immediately — written by a teacher of diplomats and journalists — still circulates among professionals who never met him but swear by his methods.

These books live because readers keep discovering them, recommending them, and passing them on. The author’s presence lingers in every conversation sparked by their words.

🧭 When Authors Teach Other Authors

Some authors live on through the people they mentored. Joanna Romer, who wrote ten MSI Press books, co-authored Creative Aging with her journalism student Cheryl Vassiliadis and Life After Losing a Child with another student, Pat Young. Pat went on to write Exercising in a Pandemic — a book born from the confidence and craft Joanna helped her develop. Teaching, co-authoring, and encouraging others to write are quiet forms of immortality. The mentor’s voice becomes part of the student’s prose.

🌹 When Collaboration Extends Beyond Life

Co-editing and co-authoring can also carry an author’s spirit forward. Judith Bach, co-author with Nanette Hucknall of The Rose and the Sword, left behind a work that continues to resonate. The book has seen a resurgence in 2025–2026, years after Judith’s passing — proof that shared vision can outlast individual lifespans. When two authors build something together, the work becomes a bridge between their lives and the readers who come later.

🌿 Other Ways Authors Endure

  • Through translation, which gives their words new voices and new audiences.

  • Through adaptation, when their ideas inspire podcasts, courses, or community discussions.

  • Through archives and reprints, which preserve their work for future generations.

  • Through quotations and citations, which weave their thinking into the ongoing fabric of scholarship and creativity.

Every time someone references, teaches, or builds upon an author’s work, that author lives again — briefly but meaningfully.

💫 The Quiet Reward

Most authors won’t live to see the full reach of their words. But the reach happens anyway. Books have their own afterlife — one that depends on readers, students, collaborators, and publishers who keep the light moving forward.

So, write what matters. Mentor generously. Collaborate bravely. It’s worth it, even if you don’t live to see it.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold. Easy to calculate, easy to predict income, and always standardized, no surprises or overestimations. Net refers to what is leftover after expenses. Gross revenue gets adjusted by a number of expenses: printing costs, printer set-up fees, shipping costs, handling fees, distributor percentage of sales (typically, 40%-55% per book), distributors' initial and continuing catalogue listing costs (without which online ...
