Canada’s First European Settlement: A Story Older Than Most People Think
Canada’s history stretches back thousands of years through the lives, cultures, and nations of its First Peoples. But when we talk specifically about the first European settlement in what is now Canada, the story begins earlier than many imagine — not with Champlain in Québec, but with the Vikings at L’Anse aux Meadows.
L’Anse aux Meadows: The First Known European Settlement (c. 1000 CE)
Long before France or England laid claim to the land, Norse explorers from Iceland and Greenland reached the northern tip of Newfoundland. Archaeological remains at L’Anse aux Meadows confirm a small Viking settlement dating to around the year 1000. This site is now a UNESCO World Heritage location and represents the earliest known European presence in North America.
The Norse did not stay long — perhaps only a few years — but their arrival marks the first documented European attempt at settlement on Canadian soil.
Early French Settlements: Port-Royal and Québec
After the Vikings, European settlement resumed centuries later with the French.
Port-Royal (1604)
In 1604, French explorers Pierre de Monts and Samuel de Champlain established the first successful European settlement north of Florida at Port-Royal, in present-day Nova Scotia. This Acadian settlement became the foundation of France’s presence in the region.
Québec (1608)
Champlain went on to build a fortified habitation at Québec in 1608. This settlement endured and grew, becoming the heart of New France and one of the most important cities in early Canadian history.
Tadoussac: The Oldest Continuously Occupied European Site
While Port-Royal and Québec are often highlighted, Tadoussac (established in 1600) holds a unique distinction: It is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in Canada. Located at the meeting of the Saguenay River and the St. Lawrence, Tadoussac began as a French trading post and remained active despite harsh winters and early setbacks.
Indigenous Foundations: The True Beginning of Canada
It’s important to remember that European settlement is only one chapter. For thousands of years before these arrivals, Canada was home to thriving Indigenous nations — Inuit, Cree, Dene, Huron-Wendat, Iroquois, Sioux, and many others — each with its own culture, governance, and history. Their societies formed the deep foundations upon which later interactions and alliances were built.
Why This History Matters
Canada’s earliest settlements reveal a story of exploration, resilience, conflict, and cultural encounter. From Norse explorers to French colonists, and from Indigenous alliances to the birth of New France, these beginnings shaped the country’s identity long before Confederation.

Book Description: A modern, Canadian Travels with Charley.
Discover Canada like never before -- from a personal perspective, similar to John Steinbeck's view of America in his 1960 book Travels with Charley. The author travels from coast to coast in a trailer with his wife and pets, including their Standard Poodle, Elly, in order to gain a better understanding of his adopted country. Interspersed between descriptions of history, cultures, places, and icons are the author's reflections on various things such as Elly's antics, signage, ferries, political injustice, environmental issues, and animal instincts. To provide a canine's perspective, Elly reflects on things of interest to her, including cats, cows, and other critters...but especially cats!
Where was Canada's first settlement? What is its prettiest town? When and where was its most devastating shipwreck? And who was its greatest hero? Find out by reading this account of the author's journey through a unique and wondrous country, brimming with marvelous natural and man-made icons. But above all, the author's interactions with its hospitable people make him justifiably proud to be Canadian. An informative read for armchair travelers with a spirit of adventure, for those wanting to learn more about Canada, and for any cross-Canada traveler, especially RVers and dog lovers.
