Pride in Endurance: When “Okie” Became a Badge of Honor

post inspired by Sharon Cole's book, Hazel and Olaf

Once, the word Okie was a slur whispered behind closed doors and shouted from pickup windows. It meant poor, displaced, unwelcome. It meant you came from somewhere the wind had stripped bare.

But over time, that word changed — not because the world softened, but because the people it named refused to break.

From Dust to Determination

The migrants who fled the Dust Bowl carried more than their belongings; they carried a fierce will to survive. They worked the fields, built homes, and raised children in a land that had first rejected them. They learned to endure — to keep going when the soil turned hard and the welcome turned cold. And endurance, quietly, became their inheritance.

By the 1950s, “Okie” no longer meant failure. It meant grit. It meant the kind of strength that doesn’t announce itself but shows up every morning before dawn.

The Quiet Transformation

Language changes when life does. As the children of those migrants grew up, they began to wear the word differently — not as shame, but as story. It became shorthand for perseverance, for the kind of faith that keeps moving west even when the horizon looks endless.

The label faded, but the spirit remained. It lived in the rhythm of work, in the songs of Woody Guthrie, in the pages of Steinbeck, and in the quiet pride of families who remembered where they came from.

Endurance as Legacy

To endure is not merely to survive; it is to transform hardship into heritage. The descendants of those travelers still carry that legacy — a belief that dignity is not given but earned through persistence and grace.

The “Okie” label faded into history, replaced by pride in endurance. And in that transformation lies a truth worth remembering: sometimes the hardest journeys create the strongest people.

Book Description:

They sold the farm, packed up seven children, and chased a promise called California.

Based on Hazel’s journal, this true story follows a family that leaves Wisconsin hoping for relief from brutal winters—only to run out of money with hundreds of miles still to go. Stranded and desperate, they enter a world of labor camps, endless fieldwork, hunger, and exhaustion, where families are worked hard, paid little, and treated as disposable.

Once respected and secure, they find themselves suddenly labeled vagrants. Pride becomes a liability. Dignity must be defended daily. And survival depends on grit, faith, and refusing to give up—especially for Hazel, who will not allow poverty to erase who she is or break her family apart.

This is a raw, gripping true story of endurance, injustice, and a woman who stood her ground when everything was taken away.

Endorsement:

Hazel and Olaf is a magnificent story of resilience, perseverance, and the ability to overcome so many challenges and still believe in the good of people and in the good within. (Irit Schaffter, Author of Good Blood: A Journey of Healing)
