A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: A Parallel between Human Intelligence and Book Promotion

Image
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.  Today's post continues the book promotion theme from last week and some previous posts but from a somewhat different perspective.  At the risk of seeming a bit meshuggeneh , I believe an understanding of human intelligence can provide some insight into book promotion. Intelligence (g) Basic human intelligence is often called (g) by psychologists. So, what is (g_? Here is one definition: " The term  general intelligence (g)  refers to a broad mental capacity that influences performance on cognitive ability measures."   There are many other definitions of (g), but they are all similar and less important than the proposal...

Daily Excerpt: Tips, Tools, and Anecdotes to Help during a Pandemic (Charnas) - Tip 6: The Same Pep Talk

Image
Excerpt from Tips, Tools, and Anecdotes to Help during a Pandemic by Joanna Charnas.  6. The Same Pep Talk   I’ve had the same chronic illness for forty years, and I continue to have occasional relapses that necessitate staying home for one to two weeks to recover. I’m frightened every time this happens, and with each episode, I give myself the same pep talk. I remind myself that, with one notable exception (when I had a relapse and a sinus infection simultaneously), I always recover within two weeks. I tell myself my illness isn’t progressive, and so this relapse will be like all of the others, and I’ll be able to resume my regular activities in at most two weeks. I remember that eventually I always return to a functional state, and all I need to do is take care of myself and I’ll be fine. These re lapses never get easier and they still frighten me, but giving myself a pep talk and remembering how well I’ve managed over the decades helps me get through...

The Story behind the Book: How to Get Happy and Stay That Way (Romer)

Image
This week's book back story features How to Get Happy and Stay That Way by Joanna Romer -- a perfect Christmas theme! from the editor -- I will have to tell this story since Joanna, alas, is no longer with us. She passed away suddenly from a heart attack a few years ago. Still, her books are loved and still sell.  This particular book proposal caught my attention immediately. Happy is the name of my cat, and here was an author wanting to tell the world how to get him. Oh, right, she meant joy, happiness, peace -- not my cat! At the time, Joanna was exploring some of the happier, kinder, and kind-to-self themes, writing several books in that vein. Maybe she was looking for joy. Maybe she had found it and wanted to share it. In either event, the book is certain to help others find the joy in their lives. Purchase the paperback 25% discount with coupon code FF25 at the  MSI Press webstore . For more posts about Joanna and her books, several of which have won awards, click...
