Should You Board Your Pets, Take Them with You, or Leave Them Home with a Sitter?

There’s no universal answer. The right choice depends on your pet’s temperament, health, and the nature of your trip. Here’s how to think it through.

1. Boarding: structure and supervision

Boarding can be ideal for pets who thrive on routine and social interaction.

  • Pros: Constant supervision, regular feeding and exercise schedules, and professional care. Many facilities now offer enrichment activities and webcams for peace of mind.

  • Cons: Stress from unfamiliar surroundings, noise, and other animals. Cats and anxious dogs may shut down or refuse food.

  • Best for: Social dogs, adaptable cats, or pets who have boarded successfully before.

If you choose boarding, visit the facility first. Observe cleanliness, staff demeanor, and how animals are handled. A short trial stay before a long trip can help your pet adjust.

2. Traveling together: companionship and continuity

Taking your pet with you can be deeply rewarding — shared experiences, fewer worries about separation, and continuity of care.

  • Pros: Your pet stays with their person, reducing anxiety. You can monitor health and comfort directly.

  • Cons: Travel stress, heat exposure, motion sickness, and logistical challenges (lodging restrictions, transport rules).

  • Best for: Confident, well-traveled animals who enjoy car rides or adapt easily to new environments.

If you travel with your pet, plan for rest stops, hydration, and safe containment. Research pet-friendly accommodations and local veterinary clinics in advance.

3. Home with a sitter: comfort and familiarity

Leaving your pet at home with a trusted sitter often provides the least disruption.

  • Pros: Familiar environment, consistent routines, and reduced stress. Ideal for cats, older pets, or animals sensitive to change.

  • Cons: Less supervision if the sitter visits only once or twice daily; potential loneliness if your pet craves company.

  • Best for: Independent pets, bonded pairs, or animals with strong territorial comfort.

Choose sitters who understand your pet’s quirks — feeding rituals, hiding spots, favorite toys. Written instructions and daily updates help maintain peace of mind.

Making the decision

Ask yourself:

  • How does my pet handle change?

  • How long will I be gone?

  • What level of supervision do they need?

  • What will make them feel safest?

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold. Easy to calculate, easy to predict income, and always standardized, no surprises or overestimations. Net refers to what is leftover after expenses.
