The Divine Is Larger Than Our Expectations



We live in a world that loves definition. We name, categorize, and measure everything—from galaxies to emotions. Even our spiritual lives often follow this pattern: we imagine the Divine as something we can understand, predict, or contain. Yet the truth is far more humbling. The Divine is larger than our expectations—larger than our theology, our imagination, and our capacity to comprehend.

1. The Limits of Expectation

Expectation is a human reflex. We build it from experience, culture, and desire. We expect God to act in ways that make sense to us—to reward goodness, to punish evil, to answer prayer in recognizable form. But the Divine does not operate within our logic. It moves through paradox, silence, and surprise.

When we expect the sacred to appear only in holy places, we miss its presence in ordinary ones. When we expect revelation to sound like thunder, we overlook the whisper. When we expect love to look like comfort, we fail to see it in challenge.

Expectation narrows the aperture through which grace can enter.

2. The Divine Beyond Definition

Every tradition has tried to describe the Divine—through names, attributes, and metaphors. Yet each description is partial. The Infinite cannot be captured by finite language. The moment we say “God is…” we are already speaking in limitation.

Mystics across centuries have known this. They speak of the Divine as light beyond light, darkness beyond knowing, presence beyond presence. They remind us that the sacred is not an object of comprehension but a mystery of participation. We do not grasp God; we are held by God.

3. When Expectation Becomes a Cage

Spiritual expectation can become a cage when it dictates how the Divine must appear. We may expect holiness to look solemn and miss it in laughter. We may expect truth to come from authority and miss it in the voice of a child. We may expect grace to arrive through ritual and miss it in the chaos of daily life.

The Divine is not bound by our categories of sacred and secular. It moves freely through both. Every encounter—every breath, every act of kindness, every moment of awe—is a doorway.

4. The Gift of Unknowing

To accept that the Divine is larger than our expectations is not to abandon faith—it is to deepen it. It means trading certainty for wonder, control for trust.

Unknowing is not ignorance; it is reverence. It is the posture of the soul that says, “I do not understand, but I am willing to be transformed.” It is the humility that allows revelation to surprise us.

When we release our expectations, we make space for the Divine to reveal itself in ways we never imagined.

5. The Divine in the Unexpected

The Divine often arrives disguised as contradiction:

  • In suffering that awakens compassion

  • In silence that teaches listening

  • In loss that opens gratitude

  • In difference that expands love

Every unexpected moment is an invitation to see more deeply—to recognize that the sacred is not limited to what we call “holy.” It is woven through all existence.

6. Living with Spacious Faith

Spacious faith is faith without fences. It honors tradition but remains open to mystery. It listens for the Divine in every voice, every culture, every creature. It does not fear difference; it learns from it.

To live with spacious faith is to walk through life with open hands—ready to receive what cannot be predicted, ready to be astonished.

Closing Reflection

The Divine is larger than our expectations because love itself is larger than our imagination. It is not confined to our doctrines or our dreams. It is the pulse beneath creation, the silence between words, the light that keeps expanding.

When we stop trying to fit the Infinite into our finite understanding, we begin to see it everywhere—alive, unbounded, and endlessly new.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book.
