Book Jewel of the Month: From Deep Within (Susan Lewis) - Reviewed by Joni West on Amazon

What is a book jewel? A sometimes-overlooked book with remarkable insight and potential significance. Starting in August, we will share near-daily, as possible, reviews of the monthly book jewel - short, succinct reviews that can be read in 1-2 minutes with links to the reviewer by reviewers whose words are worthy of being heard and whose opinions are worthy of being considered. Sometimes a couple of minutes contains more impressive thought than ten times that many. We will let you decide that.

This month's book jewel is From Deep Within by Susan Lewis, Ph.D., J.D.

From Joni West on Amazon:

Rarely do we have a chance to see inside the mental health system, especially the parts where criminal justice is involved. Dr. Lewis takes us inside and right up close to a variety of her patients as we sit across the table from perpetrators of horrific crimes with her and learn her thought process as she assesses them for the courts. Her calm, open, and practical approach to the people she is called upon to examine and evaluate demonstrates her ability to maintain her humanity and that of her subjects while dealing with the most unspeakable aspects of their behavior. Unlike many in the mental health and criminal justice system, she actively and purposefully exercises empathy, even when it seems too large a feat for any person. As the reader, at first, I wondered how I would evaluate each individual that Dr. Lewis was describing, but soon I found myself wondering how an obviously dedicated, sensitive, and brilliant forensic psychologist (and lawyer) was affected by this daily exposure to high-octane criminal insanity and how it affected the way she lived her daily life then and now. What does she see in her daily life that sets off red flags for her while others are blissfully unaware of potentially dangerous people? I hope she writes another book in which we get to find out!
