The Story behind the Book: One Family: Indivisible (Greenebaum)
Today's book back story provides inside information about One Family: Indivisible by Steven Greenebaum.
From the author:
In 1999, I hit the wall. Fifty years old, I couldn’t make sense of my life or the world around me. I had lived believing in a God of justice and of love. But so much hate in the world. Injustice everywhere I looked. Where the heck was God? I wanted answers. Then, after months of pleading, I heard the quiet voice of what I believed and believe was God and took three pages of dictation.
It took nearly 10 years of living with and studying the dictation to understand that I had been pointed toward Interfaith – a belief that humanity needed to listen to and respect one another if we were ever going to achieve the love and justice that lay at the core of God’s word. Now what? I felt it important to share what I had learned, which meant I needed to write a book. Me? A book? Ok, one book. I poured everything I had into it. In the end, The Interfaith Alternative was published. I was still young enough to do a cross-country book tour.
On the tour, a few fundamentalists condemned me. But mostly the reaction was positive – except that over and over I was told, “Embracing Interfaith seems wonderful. But is it practical?” By the time I got home I realized I needed to take the time and write a second book – Practical Interfaith. I was aging and the book tour for this second book was far less extensive.
On that tour, I was repeatedly asked, “You’ve written two books on Interfaith. Interfaith? What on Earth could have led you to Interfaith? With a sigh, I realized I had to write one more book, a book that would answer the question of what happened to me over the course of my life bring me to where I now stand?
Where I stand is holding close the belief that as humans,
we are one family – no dividing by race, or ethnicity, and perhaps most
importantly, no dividing over our differing religious beliefs. This is what led
me to write One Family: Indivisible, a spiritual memoir taking the reader
from my childhood to the present day, laying out what led me both to demand answers from God, and, having received those answers, to embrace all of
humanity as family.
