Book Description:

Tucker & Me: Growing Up a Part-Time Southern Boy is a poignant, humorous, and deeply human memoir of childhood in the 1960s—a time of big cars, bigger hair, and the shifting tides of American culture. Set between two dramatically different worlds, the story follows a boy raised by a single mother in fast-paced, sun-soaked Los Angeles, who spent his summers in the quiet, tradition-steeped town of Tucker, Georgia—a suburb of Atlanta where time seemed to move slower and Southern customs ran deep.

Torn between the polished, modern glamour of the West Coast and the dusty porches and drawled charm of the South, the author recounts the joys, heartaches, and culture clashes of living a double life. From funny family mishaps and awkward teenage moments to moments of real danger and emotional depth, Tucker & Me captures what it means to grow up with one foot in two worlds—and the resilience it takes to belong to both.

This memoir is a love letter to childhood, a coming-of-age journey full of grit, grace, and the unforgettable characters who shaped a boy into a man.

Review by Carolina W. on Amazon:

A first-rate memoir that is almost magical in its impact.

An affecting, heartfelt, and timeless memoir that will make you laugh and wax nostalgic about your own youth. Andrew Harvey has done a masterful job of juxtaposing his southern California upbringing with summers spent in the south. This is a straightforward memoir written in clear prose, but it pulls the reader in almost like an inspired piece of poetry. It reminds me of the movie "American Graffiti" in that you may never have experienced the exact adventures described, but it will bring back memories and emotions from your own adolescence. Both good memories and sad ones. All of his stories spring from a bygone era but nonetheless ring true today. Mr. Harvey draws timeless life lessons from his experiences that will help many readers better understand their own lives. The author may have grown up in a sophisticated southern California environment, but it was his summers in the deep south that helped him grow and mature into a successful and highly accomplished adult. You won't want to put this book down until you finish it. It is a minor masterpiece and a fantastic read. Best memoir I have read in years.
