A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: Discoverability Strategies for Neurodiversity-Focused Authors
It is Tuesday. Monday's madness is over, and Wednesday will take us over the hump, so Tuesday it is--for some serious discussion with authors. Tuesday talks mean to address authors in waiting and self-published authors who would like to go a more traditional route or who would at least like to take their steps with a publisher by their side.
This week we take a small step aside and focus on a narrow topic, one for authors of books on neurodiversity. The question is how to get these books discovered. Here are some suggestions. Hoping they will have some authors.
📚 Optimize Metadata & Keywords
- Use inclusive, specific terms like neurodiversity, ADHD, autism, OCD, executive function, and creative cognition in book descriptions and tags.
- Include emotional or experiential keywords: resilience, focus, pattern recognition, creative energy, lived experience.
🌐 Leverage Niche Communities
- Share excerpts or author interviews in neurodivergent-friendly forums (e.g., Reddit’s r/neurodiversity, Facebook groups, or Discord communities).
- Partner with neurodiversity advocacy blogs or podcasts for guest posts or features.
🧠 Highlight Lived Experience
- Frame books as by neurodivergent authors or for neurodivergent readers when applicable—this builds trust and relevance.
- Use author bios to emphasize unique perspectives and creative processes shaped by neurodivergence.
🎨 Visual Storytelling
- Create abstract graphics (like the ones we’ve been crafting) that evoke themes of rhythm, memory, or perception—these stand out in social feeds and invite curiosity.
- Consider short animated reels or quote cards with sensory-friendly design.
📣 Amplify Through Events
- Host virtual panels or Q&A sessions with MSI authors on topics like “Creativity & Neurodiversity” or “Writing with ADHD.”
- Time releases or blog posts around awareness days (e.g., Neurodiversity Celebration Week in March).
🧩 Cross-Tag with Related Topics
- Position books within broader categories like mental health, education, creativity, or leadership to reach adjacent audiences.
- Use Amazon’s A+ Content to visually showcase the book’s themes and author’s voice
